“pause”

karate chop!

greetings all,

i am reluctant to say that there is going to be no update today, and prolly not tomorrow… i’m under a deadline gun and way behind schedule.

the next batch of kuku pages sit here to my left awaiting completion, but i simply can’t as responsibility had taken hold and i really don’t want to rush them to get them out, as i love ‘em (and you guys!) too much to do things half-assed. plus things are about to hit the fan… so i want the flow to be perfect.

if things go well over the next couple of days i should have updates for you before the end of the week.

apologies,

r.

Bummer. But I at least understand the deadlines etc… Looking forward to the awesomeness.

  2. BG says:

Hey, hey, hey – it’s okay. You gave a rush of pages a while ago. Much more than expected. thanks for the heads up, but do what you gotta do first! :D and then come back when you’re ready. thanks for everything.

  3. Paigely says:

No worries. I’d rather see pages you’re proud to show, than a half-arsed concoctions thrown out just to meet a self-imposed deadline. Life happens, so flow with it. We’ll still be here. :)

  4. Dustin says:

The battle with the deadline was magnificent. Your skill is EXTRA-ORDINARY! …
And I was going to ask you to draw for us…bum bu bum buhh…
Just when I was all psyched up to see some fantastic KUKUBIRI updates you have to go ahead and give it the old karate chop! Soon enough, I’ll earn a chunk of change to both buy a print and contribute to your paypal link. Until such a time, I’ll resign myself to leaching joy from your creative works. Thanks for such a fantastic story, can’t wait till it’s printed, hope you’re finish up your real work soon enough, better to have too much work than no work at all, I like commas, but I sometimes put too many commas in a sentence, now I’m just rambling. -Later

  5. raider_geek12 says:

You can feel the story building so I for one will wait as long as it takes!

    geek

  6. MarcoDC7 says:

WITAAAAH! BRUCE LEE REINCARNATED! :P Nice Sketch.

Damn deadline gun, always pushing the little guy around. No worries, we rather you have a job and money and be able to update eventually than no money and no update at all.

  7. reidic says:

No Tuesday update?!? Ramon is dead to me!!! /sarcasm
Do your thing hoss, stay frosty. We’ll see ya when you’re ready. ;)

  8. heh, ramon, take it easy. KUku pages are ready when they are ready, and – as others have stated, I’d rather you got regular work and money – and we get pages you’re proud of – than you ‘re a starving and can’t draw at all coz there ain’ no friggin’ money.

Besides – deadline gun’s a bitch. Deal with it properly. Give it a hearty bang.

  9. Lijabo says:

    Yeah, what they said.

  10. Walter says:

Wow, great comic. I will eagerly await your return.

  11. Paul Psomiadis says:

No worries Ramon – get your serious work done first and chill afterward, so you can spend “proper” time on KuKu…

  12. Emmie says:

    Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooo….

T’is okie… We will see you soon.

    :)

  13. jackie says:

    *sigh*
I knew another update was too good to be true.

Maybe you could stop telling us when you aim to update so we can stop expecting new pages?

  14. T says:

No angst or frustration here. Just delicious anticipation. Kuku is ALWAYS worth waiting for!!! :D

  15. monadancer says:

I love your stuff! Keep up the great artwork! I look forward to the next installments!!

  16. Lijabo says:

In other news, the panel above would make a great t-shirt.

    • Jade says:

Seconded–First thing I said when I saw it, “Damn, I’d love to have that as a t-shirt.”

      • Ramón says:

        y’know i was thinking the same thing….

now would you keep it all rough like that (mebbe refined a little) of clean it up so zomgz is more depicted more cleanly like in the comic?

        • Odo says:

I would strongly suggest “cleaning it up”. One of the characteristics of Kuku is the very clean line that you use.

        • Lijabo says:

I agree with Odo. I think cleaned up would be best.

        • Jade says:

I’m with the “clean it up” crowd. Keep it in line with the comic’s style.

        • Ramón says:

thank you all for the input! i think i’m gonna definitely try and make this into a tee for the upcoming fanexpo here in toronto. i also have a design idea for the ‘brigade du chapeau”… i’ll run them by you all as things develop!

  17. chillychili says:

You overcommit to us, you overcommit to your commercial customers. Perhaps a reality check is in order.

    • Ramón says:

it’s true. it is a terrible habit of mine, which i am constantly struggling against.

that said, i am moving forward into a situation of better checks and balances in my life. i think this comes with time and knowledge… and i hope as i move forward with my plans, that they will in turn enable me to live of my own ideas and ventures and forego more, if not all, all of the corporate work.

      • chillychili says:

The thing is, you are an extremely talented artist. You have a sense of color and know how to apply it, you draw well in perspective, your characters are well conceived and drawn, your story line is interesting and flows well, and you are funny when you choose to be. This excellence makes me very upset when the updates are interrupted.

Because of all of this talent, you are apparently very much in demand for commercial work. I know that freelance jobs come when they come and usually come in bunches. You might be selling yourself short if you feel you have to take on a lot of poor paying work instead of fewer better paying jobs. You are or are becoming a premium talent and should market yourself accordingly.

  18. Plognark says:

I get it man, puttin’ food on the table has to come first.

  19. Psirus says:

Yeah, can’t draw us awesome comics if you starve :-) Keep up the good work

  20. Chesh says:

    Stop.

    Hammertime.

  21. dysc says:

man, I want to know what happens next!

you don’t need to eat that badly do you?

  22. Ana says:

DUDE! You should TOTALLY make a T-shirt with this KARATE TIME design!

  23. Stig says:

I just discovered that you started updating again. In your first update after the break you said that Kukuburi was good for your soul. I would like to add that it is good for the readers’ souls too.

  24. I just discovered your comic from Joenis over at Unconscious Ink, its gorgeous, characters have awesome perspectives and your illustration skills are top notch, good job man, you’ve found a reader in me, I hope this comic sticks around for a while, I love reading it.

  25. Fluffy (Yes people call me that) says:

Need more updates!!! Read through your entire comic today and I love it! I hope you will be able to update soon ’cause this has to be one of my favourite web-comics so far… IT’s so original and.. just perfect… It actually reminds me of some of my own dreams…

  26. Squiggle says:

Fail… I just typed out a load of positive stuff and then squashed something on the keyboard with my stupid arm cast and refreshed the page and lost it. Second time lucky…

I think the majority of fans here understand Ramon, life is mean. Doesn’t matter how much you want to do something, the fun stuff never comes before the money earning. It sucks, but we know you’ll get to it when you can because you enjoy drawing it as much as we enjoy reading it :)

Anyway, hope all is well at your end, no status update for a week now despite your hope to be comic updating just a few days late. I dont care about no comic update, just wanna know everything is still ok your end and things haven’t taken a complicated hectic turn for the more busy :P

PS Plushie characters… :P You know Im gonna post this everytime somewhere in my comment until I have my hands on a fluffy hat wearing octopus and chameleon right? :D

  27. Fluffy (Yes people call me that) says:

    I don’t want to be annoying but…

IF IF DON’T GET MY UPDATE I WILL CRY!!!

  28. Fluffy (Yes people call me that) says:

though I respect that you have other things to do right now…

Kukuburi is stilll the best comic around.

  29. chillychili says:

    Are you OK?

  30. I think … there were too many ferrets.

  31. Ramón says:

    hey there.

i’m still here, just feeling a little overwhelmed as i fall behind on deadlines. it funny how a drizzle can turn into a thunderstorm. last week’s chaos has sifted over into this week.

i have two obligations that i have to get through this week and weekend aside from kukuburi. my hopes are to wrap all by sunday night. a high hope but possible.

however whilst doing that i am working on a kukuburi update which i hope to get through today. it will only be one page.

hopefully once i tackle all this i can return to dedicating myself to kukuburi. i’m am working towards the plan of taking most of august off to get ahead on both kuku and bns, that is if life plays along for a change!

but this is a terrible habit of mine, overbooking myself. but trust me, as i have reached burn out to often this year – and after too many years of keeping this kind of pace – i am finally learning my lesson. over the past few weeks i have decided to make the plunge and make efforts to try and support myself off of my own respective projects, it’ll be scary, but i think it can be done…. but first i have to wrap up my obligations.

    • Adam says:

As much as I’d like to read Kukuburi every day (and BNS for that matter) I think we all understand paying work has to come first, but check your email for another donation, hope it’ll help a tiny bit towards getting you able to pick your jobs more and having your own stuff pay it’s own way.

  33. Lunaya says:

No rush! We’ll just look forward to the update when it comes. :)

  34. Reidic says:

    We’ll wait for ya dude.

  35. Redapples says:

dude’s got to eat, dude. When its ready it’ll be here. Supporting yourself of your own project has got to be scary but it can be done. Dave Sim had a lot to say in his Cerebus comic and there is lots more advice out there. Once its a business that you are focussed on you will know your limits and can plan accordingly. If it all gets too much you know there is a demand for your work so the odd freelance can tide you over. Keep the faith.

  36. Illogic says:

If we have to wait a while for you to stand on steady legs, supported only by your passion for creating wonderful things, then so be it.
I wish you the best of luck!

  37. Best of luck to ya.

  38. Ricki says:

Hi, I don’t think I’ve commented yet, but I love your comic so hard. Your art style is A M A Z I N G. And you’re right that Kukuburi is too good to rush. So take your time. :D

  39. Nikita says:

Are you going to fan expo? I hope so, I really would love to meet you! <3

  40. Roran says:

Just found the comic, can’t wait for the updates. I love the art so much.

  41. Helix says:

Having been a raving fanboy of your immediately recognizable art style since way back in the day when I first noticed it peppering my dog-eared RIFTS sourcebooks, I feel the need to speak up and say that I essentially alternated between making little glee noises and shouting “awesome!” while reading the currently-extant pages of Kukuburi, and am chomping at the proverbial bit while waiting for more. So awesome. I want to hang out in this creepy dreamworld of yours, dag nabbit.

  42. Nikita says:

    Yay! <333

I really can’t wait, I’m so very excited…I don’t have anything for you to sign for me though. D=

My twin sister and I adore kukuburi, we read every single one and we’ve re-read it several times and passed it on. When I started reading this comic a year ago I had just lost one of my best friends named Nadia…for some reason your work puts me at ease, and so I’m really, really looking forward to meeting you. <3

  43. Relax, slow down, take yer time =)
This is a top-notch comic and you should be very proud of it, I just went through it in one sitting and there’s no reason for you to be constantly apologizing for coming late with the updates since they’re so fantastic when they do arrive.
Consider moving to a weekly schedule; things will develop more slowly but at least you’ll have a better chance at meeting the expectations you’re setting up. This is YOUR work… You don’t want such a fun project ot become a guilt-ridden chore!

  44. Akinobu says:

No need to hurry Ramon :) Keep up the good work ;)

  45. No updates yet. Ramon sleeps in a bed of lies, blanketed with donation bowler dollars.

Just Kidding, can’t wait for the comics return.
