i swear these pages are taking me longer to create than when i first began kuku!

before i banter on i’d like to present the newest addition to the FAN ART GALLERY a lovely piece of pixel art by ALMA DARTEZ. please peruse on by and enjoy!

in the comments section of the news post the other day it was mentioned that the sporadic updates are losing the flow of the story for the readers. i whole heartedly agree and i apologize for the sporadic schedule. too many things to juggle right now.

the remainder of “chapter one” of kukuburi is plotted and will run till page 150 or thereabouts. i would like to put the remainder up sans disruption. but this is going to take a little more time than i have. i have monthly overhead that has to be met, so unfortunately of late paying work has taken precedence. though, let me tell you how i wish i could just devote my days, weeks and years to kukuburi as well as the many other personal projects that percolate in my subconscious…

so i have an idea that i would like to run by you my fellow readers. i would like to plan ahead and devote either december or january, the whole month to sitting down and doing kuku, wrapping it up and handing it to you to enjoy. to do this i was thinking of doing a donation drive of some sort. a dollar drive, with incentives of original art or prints for higher donations, created ahead of time of course. if i can raise enough to cover a month of expenses i will be set and things can get done…

what do you all think?

EDIT: the aforementioned page 103 is up…

    I’m in.

  2. Odo says:

Hmmm.. Ramon, there doesn’t seem to be a new page 104. Just the sketch of Nadia looking like Jenny Everywhere.

  3. Odo says:

NVM — just had to clean out the cache.

  4. Stina says:

I’m surprised that people are complaining when we are lucky enough to be able to read this comic wherever whenever for free. Jeez people.
No complaints here. Thanks for your hard work Ramon. You rock!

  5. Ramón says:

    thanks stina :)

i don’t think people were “complaining” in any malicious manner…

  6. Mark says:

I am totally for giving you my money for this awesome and wonderful comic.

  7. Kristen says:

Sure! I don’t mind contributing. I’m REALLY excited to see where this is going!!!

Sidenote: I didn’t know you did S&B’s PTBBOTS. I was on a plane and that book combined with my Star Wars watch got me a date! Hope it brings the same to you- although I don’t think you need it.

  8. Ryan B says:

I support the idea of a pledge drive, but as a broke student I don’t think I could participate. Maybe if you has a super-early-pre-pre-order of the print edition, I could justify that to my poor battered bank account. :)

  9. Ramón says:

    @kristen… S&B’s PTBBOTS?

    i did what?

  10. Kristen says:

Put the Book Back on the Shelf? The guy next to me on the plane leaned over and asked what I was reading and how a “girl like me” could be into comics. He then made sure I was over 18. ha. After that was settled, we had lunch. When I reread it last week I thought I saw your name…Or did I?

  11. Bigmike says:

    Um…

You aren’t suggesting that at the end of January the comic would end?!?

I could see donations to get you to spit out a chapter or something, but if you are going to come to a finish, No Way! I would pay to keep it going, not see it end. It is too awesome for that.

Donations to keep a comic going, and the artist/writer focused on the comic by giving them time has always been popular with fans otherwise, and thus I would be as well. But again… Stress the KEEP IT GOING…

  12. Parrot says:

    NOOOO.
    DO NOT STOP! D:

    I would hate that.
This comic is WAY too awesome.

  13. Ramón says:

@kristen, ah the acronym didn’t make sense, since you had s&b… but yes i did work on that. coloured one of the stories.

@bigmike, the way the story plotted out, this initial story that is, it will probably span 500 pages. i was considering a pledge drive of sorts to allow me to take the time off to dedicate a solid month of drawing and producing kuku uninterrupted, to thereby get ahead and stop the sporadic updates.

  14. Nik says:

I would definitely make a donation for more kuku

  15. Catherine says:

Despite the ever rampant truth of college kids being broke, I’d totally contribute.

This comic is good enough that it completely justifies a pledge drive. The artwork, character design, conceptualization, story are all original, and all whimsically fantastic.

I think whimsy is definitely worth some investment.
And, of course, to give you some income as well.

  16. Jade says:

I once was a poor college student, but I managed to get the piece of paper that now allows me to net a decent salary. In other words, I’ll gladly contribute money for more Kuku. :)

  17. Bigmike says:

    No, no, no, no, no…

Thats is not how it is supposed to go. 150 pages to chapter 1, then 500 to book one. Then start on book two. :D :D

LoL!!! That works out much better for me.

  18. Bigmike says:

Maybe every January we have a donation drive to get you to do a month of Kuku.

MuHAHAHa!!! We have you for life!!! And we have your comicy goodness too… :D o.O

(Gasp! The workz is getting to me. Must go home and veg…)

  19. Bezman says:

Many other web comic artists choose to keep a stack of pages “stocked”, to give them some slack if things get rough. That way, there will ALWAYS be pages available to post, even if minor mishaps occur. So why don’t you take a break, draw ten pages in a row, without posting, then start posting, as you start drawing page 11. Keep drawing one page a day, and you’ll have your buffer of ten pages stocked.

  20. Ramón says:

that’s the idea bezman. each page of kukuburi takes me a full day, sometimes more to illustrate. if i do 10 in a row that’s up 10-15 days of work depending on the complexity of the page. that’s also 10 days of no income… this way i’m trying to kill two birds with one stone, get ahead by illustrating as much as i can over the course of a month whilst being able to pay my rent :)

  21. Revdev says:

    I’m in, too

  22. as363 says:

Ramon – even without the incentive of goodies – I’m in . Late Dec. or early Jan. is real good as I need an idea of what my taxes will be . Will you be set-up for either PayPal or regular credit cards .?

And thanks again for the posts today – “simply mah va lose baby “

  23. Steve B says:

    I Love This Strip!!!!!!!!!!!

    Count me in Ramon

  24. Joanna says:

As someone in a similar situation (since when do things like “rent” and “a day job” take precedence over a novel? Bah), I will gladly chip in to help you get things going on Kuku. It’s a beautiful project, and provided I don’t have any unexpected medical bills in the next few months (God willing, fingers crossed!), I’m all in.

  25. Thornae says:

Well, I’m about to move to France, but I’m sure I’ll be able to find some spare cash for Kukuburi.
    Consider me in.
(Especially since I’ll have lots more free time once I’m over there, so I’ll be hanging out for Kuku updates…)

  26. Odo says:

Hmmm — Ramon, do banks in Canada take US dollars in check form without exorbitant fees? I have to admit that I am allergic to PayPal, but would be perfectly happy to send you a check if it didn’t cost you money to cash it.

I love the subtle effect of Nugget rising up alongside the “hungry”. However, I do have a question. If, as I and several others have postulated, Nugget is the result of Nadia’s “hit” in the Battleship game, how did he/she/it come in contact with El Snail? He (El Snail) seems to know his way around, which implies that he’s more than just a few hours old. (All this is moot if Nugget is a long-time resident of the Inbetween.)

Oh, and when you publish the books, please make sure that they are in a format size that will do justice to your art. (I’m thinking at least 8×10.)

  27. nico says:

    I”m in too.

  28. Tom says:

I’d toss a few bucks your way.

  29. Chip says:

Donation drive works for me! As do these sickenly kick ass pages!

As a fellow pro, you’ll get no crap from me. I’m lucky to finish a single page in 2 weeks, what with family and finances, so your achievements floor me.

    Thank you.

  30. Shane says:

    I’m so in.
I think it would be great if you could do this full time.

  31. Remillard says:

Beautiful update as always Ramon. Well worth the wait. Count me in on the pledge drive.

  32. Martin says:

Donation drive seems like a good idea – this is one of few comics I’d be willing to fit into my student’s budget. However, my walls are somewhat dull and empty – a promise of a print or some art would definitely persuade my wallet to cough up a few coins…

  33. Eileen says:

I am a poor college student (and here I thought that it was just a stereotype…) and I really wish that I could give more. I would be happy to contribute, but I can’t really give a lot. :’(
It’s a great story! I love all the colors and I feel like I fell into Wonderland with this story.

  34. GvonR says:

Do youstill take $US above the border? If so, how do you want it? I could slip a fiver or two in an envelope and post if that works for you. Ihave been enjoying the hell outta the story and think it’s time I contributed somethin’ to the starving artist cause (usta be one meself) Keep up the good work!!!

  35. Adam says:

I’d be happy to give a few £’s (whatever that works out to in C$’s)

  36. nisi says:

let the money drive begin! i’d LOVE some original Kuku art!

  37. Rodrigo says:

Hi Ramon! I love your comic so I just throwed in my two cents to help you a bit ;) Just please, tell me how you ink your pages, your lines are just so great… I asked you two times before but got no answer :(

Anyway… Keep it up! your job is amazing!

    – Rod

  38. Dave says:

Donations work. And they have the added benefit of being “easy” (assuming you don’t go crazy on the give-aways) once it’s set up.

Another (additional) option would be to sell stuff. T-shirts, hats, prints, rocks from your backyard named “Nug”… We’d pretty much buy anything if it had to do with Kuku.
There are numerous companies out there who make it easy to design and sell your own swag – they keep some profit, you make some profit – and your fans get your name out there for you (just be sure everything has your URL on it, of course.)

Donations or swag; I’d be sure to send something your way!

  39. Bob B says:

Put up some prints to buy so that I can help you meet that overhead, c’mon mate.

  40. PomPom says:

    Also in :)
Not after an incentive, Kukuburi is enough!! and it seems to defeat the purpose of a “donation”…

Will you have paypal? I’m a wuss when it comes to internet cash :p
However, as an Australian my dollars are shrinking with the recent financinal state but I like to think every bit helps :)
Also, if you manage some time off and get ahead with things, i’m very keen to but some merch :p

PS- do you get to keep your place? I think i missed something, will go back and check =/

    From Pom

  41. PomPom says:

    I’m a stoopid-
    “Billing information – Paypal”

Apart from that line in the above comment, the rest still stands!!

  42. Shannon says:

I’m totally game! You should try auctioning off things like prints and originals as well.

  43. tree1334 says:

I would be all about donations, or if you put up art prints for sale (or t-shirts, that sort of thing). I love Kukuburi and would hate to ever lose it.

  44. joshua says:

I would definitely donate. Doing a lump sum in one month is do-able, but if you set something up to automatically take $5-$10 from my account every month, I’d sign-up for that too.

Thank you for telling this wonderful story.

  45. What? Finish the story? Then where would I go for inspiration? As a beleaguered deadline balancing artist myself, I gotta say, I am fine with the schedule as is. But then again … sure I would pay to see it complete, as long as you promise us something else to replace it.

So how much? $20, $30? Lets get the ball rolling!

  46. Christina says:

Hey Ramon! I just want to say on behalf of my husband and I, we would be more than willing to make a small (very small right now mind you, we are poor, ha ha) contribution to your comic; we get excited every time you have a new page up; it doesn’t matter if they are spaced out, you are getting them done. We’ve been reading since you began Kukuburi and love your beautiful art, imagination and creativity. Jeff (my hubby) actually has the page with the purple giraffe set as the background on his zune, lol. Anyway, just wanted to say that we completely understand that life throws a wrench in things sometimes, and we will always be die hard fans! Keep up the beauty!

  47. Phil says:

I’m in too! If you sell some originals, do let us know!

  48. Jessica says:

Oooo I simply love your comic! I can’t wait for more. Sadly I would be unable to donate anything ( being a poor college student can do that to ya)

  49. Bigmike says:

Yeah, just set up a paypal account for donations. Usually paypal can figure out how to solve the differences between countries and different forms of payment. It is easier on us too.

  50. Rachel says:

This will be a classic when it’s done and I’d be proud to support it. I am past my starving college days and will kick in more than a few dollars to you.
