    First!

Just have to say awesome as usual. Soo Rendo and the funky fresh skeleton know each other hey…

  2. Eugene says:

Well this was an interesting conversation. That’s a fairly amiable relationship they’ve got with their villainous rival, I’d say.

  3. Doomguy says:

Heheh… Tenticles. Makes me think of La Blue Girl. If it goes that route, the crazy Skelebob guy looks like he could play a mean sax. Jazz, baby, ahh yeah.

  4. Steve says:

The plot thickens some more! And what is pabulum and why are they being fed it?

  5. Reidic says:

Pabulum has a few definitions, although in this context I’m guessing it most closely adheres to the second of these definitions:

    pab·u·lum
    Pronunciation: \ˈpa-byə-ləm\
    Function: noun
Etymology: Latin, food, fodder; akin to Latin pascere to feed — more at food
    Date: 1733
1: food; especially : a suspension or solution of nutrients in a state suitable for absorption
    2: intellectual sustenance
3: something (as writing or speech) that is insipid, simplistic, or bland

  6. Sophty says:

I just finished reading the whole archive….Love the concept!!! Love the color palette! Definitely one of my favorite wc’s out there

  7. CoyoteLovely says:

Reidic – I’m reading it more as the third definition – I think the Skull was being sarcastic in his own way. Rendo said she was difficult to find – Skeleton then goes “well, I can understand it – They are eating intellectual poo”

Ramon! If you get sick again – try finding “Oil of Oregano” it takes awful. but I swear it helps, and it’s not that expensive. The P-73 kind is the easiest to find – and is available in the liquid form that you’ll want to take. Look on line for the uses and stuff – but it comes really highly reccomended by me!

  8. Bantiarna says:

JUST thought I’d mention…. there’s no ‘next’ button under number 72…. I missed the last up date and TOTALLY forgot about webcomics entirely for most of this week (overnight shifts bite)…. so I noticed it this morning…

    AWESOME as usual ^^

  9. I just stumbled across your web comic today. I started from the beginning and read every single one. The composition, color, and intriguing story line makes this a great web comic. I truly love it. I like the Skeletons demeanor in this update. Standing there with his coat blowing in the wind like he’s Michael Jackson or something. Great work! Hope you feel better.

  10. Wow….
    shit….
    crap…
that is awesome man. I am totally hocked up. Me cago en la leche :)

How do you do your drawings man???
Is that “pen tool” in illustrator?

Are you planning on publishing this on print? I want one :)

    Enhorabuena!!!

  11. Odo says:

“Why, yes, Mr. Skull, you did indeed suggest that.”

(See page fiftynine) “…as I sent her careening to her death moments ago.”

Cheating, Mr. Skull, cheating. Of course that’s what you do best.

This is a bit of a backtrack in time, I think, as the camera switches to a previously visited scene. It is a cliche, but an effective one, that Rendo and Mr. Skull have met before. It is also foreshadowed at the very beginning of the induction of Nadia to the Inbetween.

I love the interaction — they are conversing, but Mr. Skull is also having an internal monologue at the same time. So much to see in two brief pages.

  12. Tom says:

Man, I’ve lost the thread of this thing somehow, I’m going to have to reread the whole thing… that should be fun! :)

  13. blaky says:

ok… Pabulum is an oat (or corn) baby food. hence the skeleton guy is commenting on how young she is. calling her a baby.

  14. Sir RItalin says:

@blaky: But he says “they”. I think he’s referring to the people of Nadia’s world (by extension, to ours), as presumably the heroes who challenge him are drawn, as Nadia was, from among them. But the challengers are hard to find in this world because of the media pap they are raised on, in a civilization that puts warning labels and training wheels on everything.

    Nadia doesn’t need training wheels.

  15. Fable says:

Yup, definitly had to look up Pabulum too. Nice word, though, I’ve got to use it now. Great page!

  16. Chip says:

    You know I love it…

  17. yawsh says:

I’ve been keeping up with this for a few weeks and all I can say is WOW. Awesome style, and I like how the story slowly builds to wherever it’s going.

So the Skeleton has some kind of Beetlejuice power where he needs someone to say his name. (Also see: Candy Man, Bloody Mary, ect…)

I dig the reference of “the last one”. I wonder how many ‘generations’ of chosen-ones have fought this guy. As for his implying, he did say he sent her careening TO her death. He sent her to where she is now, which is certainly a life-or-death situation. But he hadn’t specifically said he killed her. He hasn’t said a specific word the whole time.

Maybe he was a lawyer before he lost all his skin ;)

  18. Jane says:

This reminds me of when the old men who used to be superpowers will get together and reminisce about “The good old days,” even though they hated each other.

  19. Ramón says:

okay some of you may notice, those who checked up on the update before i posted here, that the dialogue has changed on this page.

after rereading what i had done last night i felt that rendo came off all wrong. he kinda sounded like a douche, uncaring of nadia, thinking of her more of as a tool than a person. completely off his character.

i had to drop some of the dialogue referring to the “last one” but this has been mentioned before, so nothing new here. however when i go to print i think i’d like to expand this sequence by another two pages, it’s too crunched. i like to pace things out a little more, but i didn’t want to do this on the web as it can drag a sequence out uncomfortably…

so, uhm, yeah .. .call me crazy :)

  20. Lisa H says:

Your Crazy! No seriously great work as always. Not even remotely diapointed to hear you say WHEN you print not if!! Yay!

  21. Lisa H says:

Shit, You’re Crazy. I hate it when people do that and I just did it!

  22. Sam says:

Ramón you are (not) crazy …….. maybe!

is there any chance you will be starting a forum for this comic rather that the comment section here?

  23. Steve B says:

    This Comic So Rocks!!!!!

  24. as363 says:

Don Ramon – so glad you put in the part about changing the dialog – so i copied this one and marked as an “a” to make it stand out . Felt it was a good way to follow your creative process . But please – don’t go back and change them all . What a confusion that would result in . And hen again – it could be even more enjoyment . The choice – as always – is yours .

On another subject – when you are well and truly back into it all – don’t forget about cast up-dates . They serve to fill out the edges and give us more depth . The one on Mr. Skeleton should be a scream .

  25. as363 says:

Sorry – should read ” And then again” – call it a “senior moment”

  26. SciVo says:

Of course, that so many of us had to look up “pabulum” just goes to show what our media feeds us. Thank $DIETY for WordWeb or the computerized dictionary of your choice!

  27. Odo says:

Amazing — Ramon changes all the dialog and my comment stands! *clasps hands over head*

*steps off platform* ooops! *lands on second platform one foot down*. Mr. Skull is still cheating.

  28. Ramón says:

haha – i wanted the gist if the dialogue to remain the same, as well as touch on the same pertinent notes, it was more rendo’ delivery and flow of the overall dialogue that bothered me.

    :)

  29. Phil says:

When you do publish this ( in print ), landscape format would look pretty good, like Espinoza’s Rocketo. Or portrait, but with the signatures and cover folding at the top; I haven’t seen anyone do that yet, and you could hang it up like a calendar.

  30. Amemait says:

    The skeleton…
Is it wrong that he just exudes HAWT?
    -wants an icon-

  31. Ramón says:

but phil, the art/pages are, uhm, square…

  32. Wonderland says:

    What dose he mean by

“my civility as those who have stood before you”

  33. Doyle says:

I like how Rendo’s tentacles seem to wiggle and fluctuate as he floats in the air. Great Job.

  34. kristina says:

    and the plot thickens…

  35. Swamp says:

About the pabulum, I’m wondering if Ramon isn’t just referring to Pablum (which of course took its name from the latin word pabulum, in its meaning of food, fodder) and is an extremely popular processed cereal product that pretty much all infants get fed with in Canada…

  36. Swamp says:

I shoul also have specified for those unfamiliar that Pablum was created specifically to provide all required nutrients and other vitamins to the babies, hence at the same time a reference to Nadia’s youth and an “explanation” for her strength…
Or of course, Ramon is voluntarily using the latin form to include both of these meanings (physical and intellectual sustenance)…

  37. steve says:

    your comic is brilliant!

  38. Odo says:

Hmmm… The more I re-read these last two pages, the more I see.

In reply to several about “pabulum” and “Pablum”. Pablum is baby food. It may be formulated to be complete, but it is baby food. The use of the word “pabulum” implies that the intellectual and spiritual food that the people of this world are being fed is baby food, and that therefore true strength is rare because most people are not progressing to “solid food”. We are protected babies without adult strength. Nadia and those like her are rare; “Carpe Diem” in its truest sense is not a modern sensibility.

With respect to Rendo’s comment: “You have my civility as those who have stood before you – and that is all.” I see it as referring to Mr Skull’s predecessors, not Nadia’s. Rendo is refusing to name Mr. Skull because that would legitimize him. Rendo *is* the leader of the Brigade du Chapeau, and is probably older than he (he? — does a flying purple tetrapus have gender as we understand it?) looks. Part of the ambiguity of the statement is that Ramon has not put commas into the text balloons, and the phrasing of the sentence is important to its parsing. I rather like its current ambiguity.

    Want to fast-forward the week… :P)

  39. as363 says:

Monsieur Ramone -Merci bien pour le addition de la “cast” . C’est tres magnifique – N ‘est pas ?

  40. Nerd Mom says:

Love the comic. No, serious, I keep reading it, even when I should be catching some sleep. :)

Only one question: Is it just me or did you re-post this page with different dialogue? I could swear this dialogue had included phrases such as “You will get no strength from me.” and “mouthy. I preferred the last one, silent” Or something like that.

Either way, thanks for making this script a wonderful place to get lost in. :)

  41. Ramón says:

yep, i did change up the dialogue, if you scroll up into the comments or click on the news link on the right i go on about why, if you’re so inclined ;)

glad you’re enjoying the read though!

    and as363, thank you :)

  42. Nerd Mom says:

Ah yes, I know see the post and the handy news link, ahem, *cough*, I blame it on lack of sleep. :)

  43. Flit says:

Sorry to be anal, but if you want correct french grammar it’s très not trés. ;)

    Not a big deal though.

  44. Flit says:

    Haha, that was fast!

  45. Odo says:

Hey… what happened to the text on half the messages? I can read them in highlight, but not easily.

  46. Odo says:

heh… now everything is back to normal… or is it? *looks around nervously*

  47. Chameleon says:

ooo… tres rare? they need to get her hat to her so we can find out what her power is… and I hope they get to her before the evil doggies do

  48. Eddie says:

Man, skully worries me more and more each update.

Btw, love the full picture Ghrung in the cast page. Awesome artwork!
