and here we have the remaining pages that i had hoped to have up yesterday!
thank you all for the well wishes. i am feeling nominally better today, so hopefully my health is on an incline.
regarding the rss feed. i recently started using feedburner for kuku’s rss feed. so this might be why it hasn’t updated in your reader, a simply re-subscribe should rectify that.
also, for those who might be interested in spreading the kukuburi word via various avenues i’ve put up a couple different links in the sidebar, stumbleupon and a facebook share. if you can recommend others, please do :)
also, in a similar regard, does anybody use the “tag comic” buttons in the sidebar? if not i’m thinking i might dump it…
till next week!

Oh, boy.
Why do I really, really, have a feeling that there is no roof on her room? And a strong suspicion that something is looking in on her?
More, more!
damnit! the suspense is killing me!!!
Hey, you going to be at Wondercon this year, i’d like to pick up some Kukuburi stuff if so
heh heh, tune in next week to find out what happens to sweet nadia ;)
i wasn’t planning on attending wondercon as i really have no swag to speak of currently. but i am hoping to attend ape later in the year, and hopefully have a kukuburi vol.1. book in tow, amongst other things… keep your fingers crossed!
Will that Vol. 1 book be available through Diamond by any chance? Or are you going to self publish? Basically, where can I get THAT BOOK!?! Other than at ape.
By the way, my 3yr-old thinks you rock … she’s getting to know when Tuesday is cause that’s new Kukuburi day.
Thanks
OKAY….so I thought the same as Odo. No roof! I think that maybe she has some sort of power/ability that made her room appear temporarily, cuz she said that she was falling and wanting to wake up in her bed. Hmmmm…. Curiouser and curiouser!
Ramon – about the tag option, I tried using it this week to see if it’s useful, but really it’s just as easy to click the newest page. It’s probably come in handy for someone reading your archiv that didn’t have time to finish it, but yeah, that’s my two cents. Great job on the ‘leaving us wanting more’ bit! :)
….I’ve been thinking…certain things in Alice in wonderland and certain things in the comic are similar. I mean this as a good thing, I’m a big fan of Lewis Carroll. Here’s what I mean:
“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?”
“What if I should fall right through the center of the earth… oh, and come out the other side, where people walk upside down.”
I think the connection is unintentional yet fun. I think Kristina noticed it too with the her “curiouser and curiouser” comment! Am I right?
love it! any chance you’d make an appearance at NYC’s comicon?
Sunshine- Yeah, I guess there is some similarities.
Does anyone know of where to find a comicon on the west coast? I’m in Alaska, would love to go to one, but I always hear about them on the east coast.
@ kristina: There’s always the International Comic-Con in San Diego; that’s a HUGE west coast one.
Apparently I’m the only loser using the tag button. I promise not to feel rejected if you drop it.
alice in wonderland is an interesting analogy. i’ve never read it (i know – my bad) but now i’m kinda inspired to pick it up :)
regarding conventions. APE (the alternative press expo) is on the west coast, in november in san fransisco to be exact. i am not attending san diego comicon. for the first time in many years. i just want a real holiday for a change!
though i will be at the NY COMICON, but only as a guest (touring around and checkin things out) but i will be back in ny for MoCCA in june.
beyond that i am doing a few local toronto shows and considering doing SPX (small press expo) in bethesda, maryland in october.
as things become more official i will post notices in the blog and at the same time list the convention with a pertinent link in the lower portion of the sidebar…
yay for cliffhangers! I can hardly wait til next week!
Ramon you must read Alice in Wonderland! I was familiar with the story of course cuz I don’t live under a rock but I only just read it this year (I’m 30 BTW). It was in a Chapters super sale bin and I just grabbed it on a whim. It is amazingly good for childrens lit. And as always you rock my socks. You just my get me to come to one of the T.O. cons. I haven’t been to one since I developed breasts. They can be dangerous at cons!
Nice Poster.
*blink* *blink*
Hoom. Alice is “childrens’ lit” the same way “The Hobbit” is childrens’ lit. It was written for children by a British author. On the average Brit authors seem to have a greater respect for children than do American authors, which might explain why more Brit children read.
The similarities between Kuku and Alice seem to me to be more superficial than deep. Both involve an innocent (in the sense of unknowing) girl/woman thrust into a magical situation. However, Nadia’s innocence is not the same as Alice’s; she is starting where Alice left off. Nadia’s “You’re all kinds of lame.” is equivalent to Alice’s “You’re nothing but a pack of cards.” However, that’s Alice’s *last* comment, her “growing up” moment; it’s Nadia’s *first* comment on confrontation, she’s already grown.
Hmmm… Lewis Carrol re-incarnated as a web-cartoonist. What would the next adventure of Alice look like? It wouldn’t be Kukuburi, but it might well be worth looking at.
BTW – I really like the expression on Nadia’s face as she opens her eyes. I can imagine her nostrils flaring and the soft intake of breath before she speaks. It isn’t terror (though it might become terror if needed) – it’s just … well there it is and it’s not what she was expecting and it needs to be absorbed.
I don’t know what it is about your work, Ramon, but it makes me ramble. Read Alice. You need to do that.
i suggest very strongly that you pick up alice in wonderland. just make sure it’s a copy that also contains through the looking glass, and if you can find it, the hunting of the snark. i recommend that book to anyone and everyone, but with your storyline, i especially recommend it to you.
keep up the awesome work with the comic by the way – i’ve been hooked since the first day i stumbled here!
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spreading the word… I would put in a topwebcomics and buzzcomics button. I do not esteem their ratins always but it makes things visible that I might otherwise not see. I am sure that we could all (guys? ladies?) do enough button pushing to put you in the top rankings for a while.
You are an evil man Ramon.
I couldn’t help posting after a Brenda, hahah
Keep up the good work Ramon
oh the cliffhangers
Um, wow. I haven’t checked for a few days, since we had Mr Skel in his dramatic pose before the Battlewhale.
Just amazing. Totally awesome!
I too had the same thought as Odo. I wonder who is looking in through the ‘roof? I’m wondering if it’s Mr B….
I’m probably like the only East Coast person here today, but somewhat as a cry in the darkness – Come to FLORIDA for a Con!!!!
This is awesome and lovely and wonderful and so painful I feel like you’re pulling out my patience with a rusty pair of pliers that are too small.
AAAAAHHHHH -flails- CLIFFHANGERRR
Awesome as always.
Yeah, definitely make sure you read “Through the looking-glass” because it’s IMHO much better than the first Alice book.
THEN, once you’ve read them both, check out your library and see if they have a copy of “The Annotated Alice”. Martin Gardner (!!!) did a ton of research into finding out poems, etc., Carroll was making parodys of in his works.
They’re nice books now, seen as “safe” for kids, but at the time they must have really irritated some parents (and just made the kids SCREAM with laughter). He was a genius.
God damnit Perez, stop it
Ramon, there’s an error with the commenting system on the Butternut Squash website… all my comments are getting marked as Spam o_O It’s a great comic though, just as great as this one x]
i will definitely check out mr. carroll’s works.
koyota – all your posts came through as approved in my email notifications. however they don’t appear to exist in the actual posts or in the spam harvest. this is very strange.
sometimes i find it takes a day to filter some of the comments – i’ll see what i can do.
I love the subtleties in this comic. I could see something was off with her room in these latest updates since it was fully colored. In the beginning comic, when she was in “reality,” her room was entirely in blue and uninteresting… like the rest of her life. I can’t wait to see what she sees.
great comic, and yes, i do use the tag comic thing in the sidebar…please keep
The “tag page” never works for me. I look like an idiot, clicking it again & again, waiting for it to change colors.
Glad you’re feeling better.
Great pages, as always.
Still wanna buy this in book form.
For some reason I’m reminded of that scene in Labyrinth with the weird junk lady. You know, where she finds her room again, except it’s not at all? Yeah, I’m thinking of that. ^^;
i have been reading kukuburi from the start and i usually don’t fall behind in reading the updates. so although i haven’t used the tag system here, i will admit that i have used it on other sites like ’sam and fuzzy’ which i only discovered recently.
I reckon the wind changed and her head got stuck in that position.
Oh and what I wouldn’t give to have this is book form, I think it’d be a popular choice in comic book stores.
Unexpected yet again! Every time I believe I am a step ahead of you, I am wrong. Act humble if you wish Ramon, but you truly are unbelievably talented. This comic has not only renewed my interest in art, my minor in college, but my imagination as well.
Where was it that I misplaced my imagination. Truly, thank you.
She must be really powerful there!
I hope she can find her key again to get back, I’d volunteer to help her look.
I love the BNS poster!
And, and the comic. I guess. ;)
I do use the tag buttons, but if they aren’t there I’ll probably manage :)
Out of curiosity, Ramon, did you mention what ‘Kukuburi’ means? I was looking around to see if I could find a definition for it, and either I’m missing it, or I’m not asking the Inter-Web correctly. Would you mind filling me in?
as long asa few people are using the “tag page” buttons they will stay.
and coyote… all in due time ;)
@Odo “Brit children read” do they indeed not what Brit papers tell us.
I once played Tweedledum and Haigha to my twins Tweedledee (I know type casting ;-P ) on the stage which was my introduction to the texts of Alice. I’d recommend Jeff Noon’s Automated Alice too. And, of course, Alan Moore & Melinda Gebbie’s (not for the faint hearted or under 18s) the Lost Girls as nice companion/analysis pieces.
I’m from Britain, am now 20 and have been reading since I was four, thankyouverymuch. :P
That wasn’t what I was originally going to say in this comment though, as my original comment was going to be:
Nadia is too adorable and I want her on a t-shirt.* As soon as possible. Pleeeeeease? Thanks. :)
*Or a poster, or both. Either way.
Can I point out something I noticed?
I decided to read back through the archives today to refresh my memory – in particular to see what comparisons I could draw with ‘Nadia’s room’ in this page and in the first. Well, you don’t get a great view of the room itself in the first strip, but also, everything is dully coloured – muted tones of blue and purple and grey, not only in her room, but along her route to work, through her workplace, all the homes she delivers to. The only brilliant colours are Nadia and Mr. Bojangles.
You only see more colours once she enters the gate. What could this mean? A symbolism that this world is more interesting than the one she came from, or something more? Does the continuation of bright, bold colour in this strip mean she hasn’t left this strange world at all, was never dreaming?
Oh, I hope so :) I can’t wait to see what happens next!
… And please forgive my babbling. Heh heh.
yeah, I always use the tag page. Please keep it up.
GEEZ there are a lot of comments. You seem to be getting rather popular ;D.
And as for the tag button, I used to use that before I became addicted and started checking for updates every day (because you are utterly evil with the cliffhangers)…so maybe keep it there for newcomers?
I think I finally caught something the second time through…
He wasn’t surprised so much that the bluebird appeared on his person, persay, though he was interested that there was a new creature. The thing that I figure is that he was surprised that she cheated and the universe allowed it. It’s even more apparent in his tone of how he says that she changed the rules, after he had stated that the rules in effect were that he was the bad so he could cheat and lie but since she was the innocent and good she wasn’t allowed to.
Subtle as HELL, Ramon, but definetly effective. Good freakin job.
Forget about Alice in Wonderland, the Looking Glass or any other of the mentioned books and if You bought them, get a refund. Kukuburi is possibly too unique to have Yourself distracted by other people’s ideas. I don’t mean to be harsh, but Kukuburi is the most unique thingI’ve ever read, it’s my Harry Potter of comics. (Please forget about Harry Potter, too err… its overrated ;) ).
Personally, I’d like to see Kukuburi – the print, kukuburi – the mug, Kukuburi – the Happy meal and Kukuburi the film, I think it”s the best thing since sliced bread. I’m soo hooked, I press the newest comic-button twice a day, just in case :)
To all the other people in here, I didn’t mean to offend and if I did, please take my honest apologies.
I use the tag page button.. ^^
Amazing comic. I just started reading through the archive and was so distressed when I got here and realized it was all I could read, and would have to wait for the next update. I can’t wait to read more.
Your art is beautiful
Great comic- original and beautiful as all hell and I await new RSS feeds eagerly
Seriously, please make some of the scenes, like the descending battlewhale wallpaper in various screensizes/resolutions- they’re standalone art! I’d just download the image and slap ‘er on there, but that’d be disrespectful.
Keep forgetting to use the tags -since I got RSS and del.icio.us internet bookmarks for my “stopoffs”-, though tags are mighty convenient!
