Hiatus
August 6th, 2008greetings to all, new readers and old.
after some great reviews on COMICFENCING.COM (thank you kindly gentlemen, and i do promise to clean up my grammar in the cast section!), a little pimping from GIRLS WITH SLINGSHOTS and a mention in PC MAG’s 10 Best Unsung Webcomics you’d think the last thing i would do would be to go on hiatus. not to mention the prodding and ridicule i will receive from my studio mates and fellow TRANSMISSION Xers!
it seems the past couple months since my tenancy shenanigans began i’ve been throwing out excuses. something i hate doing, no matter how valid. i figure it can always get done. but i’m drowning.
i love working on kukuburi, along with butternut, it’s the very highlight of my week. but right now life is not too condusive in allowing me the time i wish to devote to creating kukuburi. i will not throw something up just for the sake of having something new every week, or as i have tried, every other week. with my current workload and my upcoming court hearings regarding my tenancy my brain is feeling a little lost and disjointed and because of this i’ve become a little disconnected with kukuburi.
so for the sake of the story and the enjoyment of it by you the readers i want to step away and clear up my workload to a manageable size as well as deal with the court proceedings, which a ramping up (i go to court tomorrow) so tonnes of meetings are being held with my lawyers and to make things even more interesting the opposition is playing some dirty pool so things are getting a bit chaotic.
i feel like the sword of damocles is hanging over my head.
i’ve set the date of september 9th for kuku’s return. it’s only a month away so i hope i don’t lose you all to the ebb and flow of the internet. by that time i know my workload will be of a more manageable size, ads for the court proceedings i really don’t know where things are headed there. things could be golden and i could be sitting pretty or things could go the way of evil and the corporation will crush me, drain me for every penny i don’t have and i’ll be looking for a new home.
you never know. so with that on the horizon i ask for a short reprieve.
i will be attending the upcoming local FAN EXPO later this month from august 22nd to the 24th. please swing by if you can, whether it be but for a little witty banter, a doodle or to buy some swag.

Lucky for you, Kukuburi rocks, and I know many others like myself will be waiting patiently come the 9th. I think we all understand your desire to put up quality vs. just tossing up a panel just to hit a date. You’ve set a standard we expect - so it better be good on the 9th!

Ramon, your comic kicks ass. Kick-ass comics do not happen in workhorse, hyper-scheduled, industrial fashion. Readers of kick-ass comics understand this. So go kick some ass, and we’ll all be delighted when Kuku returns.

Ramon - quality always beats quantity - take all the time you need - we all will be waiting and saying nice words to whoever/whatever may be of assistance . (trying to be PC - don’t know if I succeeded ). By the by - just gotta add todays panel to the “cast” folder - I’ll wait for however long for your text - notice they only got one hat - so they must be of similar minds about the important stuff .

As someone dealing with an upcoming potentially ugly court battle (in my case, trying to collect a very large sum of money owed for work done), I can completely sympathize with the stresses you’re facing. I’ll be thinking many good thoughts for a successful outcome for your court dealings and a swift return to a more normal and Kuku-filled schedule for you.

Ramon, buddy, you know we all love you. In the whole of the internet, you have the most amazing readership I’ve ever seen (myself excluded; I’m a dick ^_^). You’ve cultivated these people by producing a _free_ comic that is so wonderful that it attracts even more wonderful people.
Get your shit sorted. Make sure you’re in the right head space, for this and for BNS and especially for your commissioned work. Take good care of yourself first. You don’t have to worry ’bout us; we’re big kids, and we’ll find something to entertain us while you’re gone.

Your comic makes me want to read a lot at once, so I only pop in a month or two at a time so I get a good fill of a read. (I’m too impatient for serials)
So, on that note, throw your energy into taking care of business by being very prepared for your landlord tenant hearing. Bring lots of evidence, witnesses, and be organized. Bad landlords are usually bad because they are incompetent and can’t get their act together. Yes, many are jerks too, but that’s because they are useless humans.
As another poster said, “go kick some ass” and we’ll all be excitedly waiting for Sept 9 to follow our kuku.

It’s all about doing what’s best for you and by the looks of things making sure the Kukuburi that you love doesn’t turn into something its not is a big part of that and is definitely respected. I wish you all the best in the upcoming crazyness and that something sorts itself out hopefully in your favour!
A hiatus doesn’t change how great Kukuburi has been nor how great its potential is.

I can understand and sympathize with the need for a hiatus. I think all of us have had periods in our life that require one. I wish you the best with everything.
Know that I’ll be thinking of Kukuburi frequently and pining for it’s return. Be happy that I’ll miss it - that Kukuburi is something that makes so many people’s lives a little more fun and brighter. <3

Well, aside from the fact that lately we musketeers at comicfencing seem to drive the strips we review into hiatusville (Applied Living has moved there as well), I completely understand where you’re at. Tenancy courtroom proceedings can be an incredible drain (I have a friend who went through similar to what you’ve talked about). Put your energy into resolving that, and those of us who love Kukuburi will still be here and then we can start blowing your horn again.
By the way — read your JSA Classified story a few weeks ago (I was WAY behind on my comics reading). Loved your art. Not thrilled with every aspect of the story, but loved what you did with it.

So I just happened to see you on IFC Canada series Ink and I thought, “I love web comics” so I might as well give you a look-up and low and behold I do love web comics still! Thanks for putting out quality work. I have to say, this is one of my favourties along with (and here comes the name drop) Ctrl+Alt+Del which I have fell behind on.
Also I would like to announce that I claim ownership as your 21st fan. I’m sure you had thousands, if not tens or hundreds of thousands, of fans before me but I’m not pretentious enough to call myself your number 1 fan, nor even in the top 10 (but this by no means implies I like your work less than let’s say your 11th fan).
I like the number 21 and so I hereby dub myself your 21st fan (if it’s alright with you of course). As your 21st fan I will fulfill my roll by spreading your goodness the good ol’ fashioned word of mouth way and converse with my friends about the new web comic I’ve found (i.e. yours) which in turn should create a snowball effect when they tell their friends I’m not privy to and so on and so forth (a small sized snowball, I should assume with the amount of friends I have that read web comics (about 3).
Well all this rambling on has made me hungry and so I will disembark to go and create a sandwich.

So i just started reading, and i must say i’m hooked. The story is intriguing, even tho i feel like i’m probably missing something. on top of that, the art is AMAZING. it’s so bright and vivid, i’ve never seen anything like it. I’m bummed about the hiatus, but i’ll definitely be waiting. good luck with your court proceedings!

Haha, thought that would be funny after the hundreds of well wishers.
I think the best way to solve your tennancy problem is to throw a turnip at the landlords head. Thats what I would do. This may be the reason I’m banned from the fruit and veg section at ASDA and why i have no friends.
I’ll be looking out for turnip related incidents regarding tennancy law in Canada (you live in Canada right? My geographys terrible) to see if you take my advice!
Now get a shift on you slacker! I demand entertainment!

As long as it’s coming back, I’ll be checking back. I don’t care if there’s a hiatus, especially if it’s a clearly defined one. Your real life troubles deserve all the attention they need to be fixed, and all of us will wait until we can get our share of your brain once again.

Ramon, maybe the hiatus will keep the devoted. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of the comic Platinum Grit. That my friend has been on hiatus for a year ( or so it seems ) maybe my mind has distorted time perhaps… maybe a little.
Either way you’ll be fine, everybody seems o encourage you and that is the best sort of reaction you can get.

Alas, I’m in France anyway (where the 9th is half over already) so a late-in-the-day EST update will probably make me wait until tomorrow….
But I’m looking forward to more news as well; hopefully the frustrating experience with the apartment lease is coming to some kind of positive resolution. Fingers crossed.
